WSCC Chicago Formatting and Style: Word 2013: Inserting Footnotes

Introduction to Notations

Chicago style citation requires the use of notations combined with a bibliography. This means that you will use a superscript number at the end of any sentence or clause in which you use a piece of information from an outside source. Your note will appear either at the foot of the page or in a list of notations at the end of your paper.

Then, you will create an alphabetical list of your sources called a bibliography. This will be the last page of your paper.

Use the instructions on this page to insert your footnotes or endnotes into your Chicago-style paper using Word 2013.

Adding a Footnote in Word 2013

footnote is a notation that appears at the bottom of the page on which you used information from an outside source. Each page will only have footnotes for citations that appear on that page. Follow these instructions if your professor has asked you to use footnotes in your paper.

1. With your cursor placed after the period at the end of the sentence you want to notate, click the REFERENCES tab at the top of your screen.

2. Choose > Insert Footnote.

3. The superscript number will appear, and your cursor will be placed behind the corresponding superscript number under a line at the bottom of the page. This is where you can type your notation information.

4. To delete a footnote, delete the superscript in your writing (do not try to delete the footnote from the bottom of the page).

5. To continue writing your paper, place your cursor after the superscript number in your text and continue typing.

Adding an Endnote in Word 2013

An endnote is a notation that appears at the end of your writing. When you add an endnote, it will appear directly after your text. You can continue writing your paper and all of your endnotes will appear in a list at the end of your paper. Use these instructions if your instructor has asked you to use endnotes instead of footnotes.

1. With your cursor placed after the period at the end of the sentence you want to notate, click the REFERENCES tab at the top of your screen.

2. Choose > Insert Endnote.

3. The superscript number will appear, and your cursor will be placed behind the corresponding superscript number under a line after your text. This is where you can type your notation information.

4. To delete an endnote, delete the superscript in your writing (do not try to delete the footnote from the bottom of the page).

5. To continue writing your paper, place your cursor after the superscript number in your text and continue typing.
