Step 1: Format your Word Features

Step 1: Format your Word features

You will need to first set up these features in your Word Document.

Font:  HOME tab > 12 point font size and Times New Roman, Courier, or Helvetica (remember, your instructor may dictate a specific font for you to use).

Margins: PAGE LAYOUT > Margins >Normal (Top 1”, Bottom 1”, Left 1”, Right  1”)

Spacing: Choose PAGE LAYOUT > Paragraph > tiny arrow in the far right bottom corner of that box. It should open the Paragraph Settings. Then, set the spacing to DOUBLE.

Step 2: Format Your Title Page

1. Place your cursor in the center of the page by clicking HOME> Center (in the Paragraph box).

2. Make your font bold by clicking HOME> B.

3. Your title should be placed in the upper half of the title page. To achieve this, hit ENTER 4-5 times.

4.Type in your title, using appropriate capitalization. If you are using a second, more specific subtitle, place it on the second line by hitting ENTER one time.

5. Hit ENTER 6-7 times to place your name and other information in the bottom half of the page.

6. Un-bold your font by clicking HOME> B again. Type in your name (first and last) using appropriate capitalization.

5. Hit ENTER. Type in the name of the course for which you are writing the paper. NOTE: Do NOT abbreviate.

6. Hit ENTER. Type in the date in DD Month YYYY format. (Example: 20 March 2015)

7. Click INSERT tab > Page Break to move to the second page of your essay. (You can also just hit enter until you get to the next page.) You should now have two pages, one with your title, and the second blank.

Step 3: Format Your Page Numbers

.

2. Select Blank.

3. Hit Tab 2 TIMES to place your cursor on the right side of your page. This will delete the words [Type Here] which appeared when you selected Blank.

4. In the HEADER AND FOOTER TOOLS box at the top of the screen, check the box labeled "Different First Page". Note: THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP.

5. In the HEADER AND FOOTER TOOLS box, click on the small arrow next to Page Number. Select Current Position> Plain Number.

6. In the HEADER AND FOOTER TOOLS box, click again on the small arrow next to Page Number. Select "Format Page Numbers..." and type a "0" in the "Start at:" box. Click OK.

7. You should now have a "0" in the top right corner of your first page and a "1" in the top right corner of your second page.

8. Double click inside the header of the first page. Highlight the "0" and push backspace twice. This should delete the "0" while leaving the "1" on the second page. All page numbers will continue from the second page. If BOTH page numbers were deleted, restart at Step 4.

9. Click "Close Header and Footer".

Step 4: Format Your First Page

Begin typing on the second page of your document, directly after the title page. Do not re-state the title and do not add extra spaces between paragraphs.
