WSCC EBP Tutorial: Searching for Sources in the Databases

EBP and PICO for WSCC Health Sciences Students

The searching phase requires you to be flexible and patient. You will use your PICO search strategy, but you will also gain more search terms for your query as well. This means that you may do multiple searches in order to find exactly what you want. Watch these videos on searching CINAHL and using CINAHL's subject headings. If you need to use PubMed, there are some available videos as well. As always, please reach out to a librarian for assistance with searching if you need it (julie.lewis@ws.edu).

Searching CINAHL

This is a fantastic video form Purdue University on using PICO and searching CINAHL. At 12:13, she discusses how CINAHL links out to other databases. WSCC CINAHL does not do this. If we do not have an article you want or need, please send me an email at julie.lewis@ws.edu so we can ILL it.

This video will discuss Subject Headings in CINAHL. Subject headings are standardized terms used to describe the "aboutness" of a topic. They can help you find exactly what you want, instead of brainstorming multiple keywords that may help you. Watch this video to learn how to use subject headings.

Searching PubMed

This tutorial from NYU shows you how to search PubMed as well as some of its features.  Search PubMed after you have searched WSCC Health Databases. Please email me any articles you would like that you find in PubMed. If we do not have access to them, we will ILL them for you.
